Gonçalo Amaral: “There are things that I haven’t said yet”

Allegations made by the former PJ inspector are considered to be defamatory

by Cláudia Lima da Costa /HB

The parents of Madeleine McCann, the little English girl that disappeared in the Algarve on the 3rd of May 2007, have announced that they are going to sue former Polícia Judiciária (PJ) inspector Gonçalo Amaral for defamation. The former police inspector, who was responsible for the investigation into the child’s disappearance, has already reacted to the news and says that there are “things that he hasn’t said yet and that he can prove in court”.

The information was advanced by BBC, citing the couple’s spokesperson, who said that this legal action was prompted by “entirely unfounded and grossly defamatory claims”.

“We - together with our three children Madeleine, Sean and Amelie - are taking this legal action against Gonçalo Amaral over his entirely unfounded and grossly defamatory claims”.

Gonçalo Amaral reacted to the couple’s spokesperson’s statements and told TVI that he is a “tranquil man” and that he receives the news “calmly”. The former PJ inspector says that the “situation was awaited”, especially after the broadcast of the documentary, that was produced by the couple, and the interview to Oprah didn’t achieve “the desired effect”.

“There are things that I haven’t said yet”

Gonçalo Amaral further stated that he trusts the Portuguese Justice and that he has “no doubts” that the process will be reopened. “Let’s go to court! That is a way to reopen the process”, he said in a statement to tvi24.pt, alleging that there are still diligences to be made and that he has “the right” to defend himself.

The former inspector has not been officially notified of the decision, but he reacts indignantly: “This is an intimidation attempt that could backfire for them, because there are things that I haven’t said yet, things that I can prove in court”, he said.

As far as tvi24.pt was able to establish, the McCann couple already has a lawyer in the city of Lisbon who wants to pursue the process that targets not only Gonçalo Amaral, but also editor Guerra e Paz, that was responsible for the book launch, and against Valentim de Carvalho [producers of the ‘Truth of the Lie’ documentary].

The statements that are at issue are, according to the British couple, allegations that “Madeleine is not only dead”, but also that they, the child’s parents, “were somehow involved in concealing her body”, BBC cites.

It’s further explained that this process was filed in order to prevent the publication of Gonçalo Amaral’s book “The Truth of the Lie” and a television documentary by the former PJ inspector, about the case.

“We can no longer stand back and watch as Mr Amaral tries to convince the entire world that Madeleine is dead”, reads the press release that is cited by the British media chain.

  5. They will do nothing - just mouth and no actions.
It would be the first time in the history of Portugal that a person would be taken to court for writting a book based on facts - PT lawyers know they can't do anything about that.
This is just bluff once again, which is a shame, because the case would have a chance to be re-opened had they the courage to go ahead.
My respects to Mr.Amaral that has tried hardly to make them move.

  6. I am also certain that if Gonçalo Amaral can financially defend this case in court along with the others sited in this action - the McCanns will back down.

They are bluffing - hoping because of the financial implications he will back down and roll over like the Daily Express and others.

  7. Gerry and Kate, by suing Amaral you are getting into an even bigger mess. Why don't you simply tell the truth and plead insanity.

  8. I knew there must have things Amaral knows and the PJ know, that have not been said or told yet.
He would not take any risk to reopen the process, without a compleet answer.
I hope the Mccanns will pay Amaral for bad things they spread around.
Against Gerra e Paz e Valentim de Carvalho?
The McCanns may not forget to sue The Voice of America too.

  11. The past month or so has clearly shown us Kate and Gerrys desperation to hide the truth.

What worrys me is whilst the walls are finally caving in on them, I have a genuine fear for the twins.

There has already been rumour on Kate being suicidal, What if they both would rather go out with a bang then spend there time in jail and the aftermath of hatred once they are found guilty.

I personally think at this point in time Sean and Amelies own lives could be in danger, and its a time when social services need to recognise this immediatley.

The Mccanns have acted as a "pact" all along and in their current state and desperation, you could not rule out a suicide pact.

Social services need to take action now or risk having the death of two minors on their hands

  12. Message to the British Manipulation, oops sorry, Media chain.

The World already knows that Madeleine is dead, we don`t need convincing from anyone.

Good luck Mr Amaral, may you sell that book by the millions.

  13. If the McCanns think they can gag the internet into silence then they need to think again!

I hope the judge in the Lisbon court throws out the McCanns case.

To bring an action which includes the dead Madeleine as a claimant is ridiculous. It is an attempt by the McCanns to legally claim that Madeleine is alive. I hope that the judge strikes out this particular part of the claim. A dead person cannot bring a legal action.

When are the McCanns going to explain why they invented the fake break-in story? It is obvious it was a cover for the fake abductor story. No abduction means the parents are responsible for the disappearance of Madeleine.

  14. There is no secret that I have a great dislike for the McCanns. I make no bones about that I don't like any person who neglects their children.

On that note I would like to donate to Mr Amaral; so if anyone has a link and let me know where I can donate.

The McCanns have well and truly painted themselves into a corner.

    I quote...

“We can no longer stand back and watch as Mr Amaral tries to convince the entire world that Madeleine is dead.”

McCanns: The two dogs already did that for you.

Go on Mr Amaral and exhale the truth. The whole world is behind you.

  15. Don't speak for me. I sure ain't behind him!

  16. I will donate too. The UK citizens who are not family or friends of the McCanns are overwhelmingly suspicious of them. Those who look at the internet need no convincing of their involvement. Walls are crumbling.

Also, Gordan Brown has no standing at all in this country and the Labour Party has the smallest percentage of popularity since voting records began. Yes since records began !!

It is time to re-open the case Portugal and put this odious couple in there rightful place behind bars.

  17. Sean and Amelie will read and write and converse with others and search the Internet all in good time. Find a way of stopping that too. The problem is, there's no way you can stop them becoming aware that on their Best Holiday Ever you left them alone, night after night, open to all sorts of danger against which they could never defend themselves. How loving, how caring and how unselfish will be their picture of you. Can you change that now? Go on, you try that then. Good luck while you're at it.

  18. It's strange how the McCanns seem to think it takes Goncalo Amaral to convince the world that Madeleine is dead. Don't they understand that since the cadaver dog alerted so strongly in places connected with the McCann family that people have long been convinced Madeleine is dead? Madeleine is missing; the dog found the death scent. If not Madeleine's scent, then whose? Who else is missing?

Until that can be explained it is natural that people are sure Madeleine is dead. To think anything else would be downright illogical.

  19. I think the McCanns would be foolish to take legal action against Amaral. He may have manipulated this situation with the intention of getting the McCanns into court, where he will have the right to question them. It was political pressure that got him taken off the case and caused the shelving of the process. Goncalo may have found a way around the political gagging by forcing the McCanns to take legal action against him.
