McCanns Private Detectives: Answer lies in Portugal

Someone living in or around Praia da Luz - the Algarve resort where Madeleine McCann vanished - knows what happened to her, claim the private detectives employed by her parents to find the little girl.

Speaking publicly about the inquiry for the first time in a Channel 4 documentary to be aired next week, the two former British police detectives say the "answer still lies" in that small section of the Portuguese coast.

They disclose that one statement, contained in files released by police last summer, apparently corroborates the sighting by a friend of Madeleine's parents of a man carrying a small girl in the area at the time she went missing.

The search team also found statements from tourists, who all noticed a suspicious-looking man hanging around near the McCanns' apartment on that fateful evening.

And statements from the files suggest the family may have been watched in the days before Madeleine disappeared.

The documentary, Cutting Edge: Madeleine Was Here, follows detectives Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley as they try to piece together what eye-witnesses say happened two years ago.

It marks the second anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

Mr Edgar, a retired detective inspector with more than 30 years' experience in Cheshire and the RUC, is leading the probe.

He said: "There's someone local, lives locally, who has the answer to this, and not, you know, much wider than 10, 15km away from Praia da Luz. So you don't start an investigation in Morocco or Spain or France or even Lisbon. This offence happened in Praia de Luz. It's a very self-contained resort, and that's where we've started and that's where I think the answer is."

Mr Cowley, who spent three decades as a detective sergeant in police forces in the north west of England, said: "The answer still lies in Praia de Luz and it's important that we focus on Praia da Luz and the surrounding area."

  1. What a shame, then, that the McCanns and Metodo 3 were so keen to persuade us that Madeleine was in Morocco or other far-flung places! And as for eye-witness reports.... when Shannon Matthews went missing in the UK and the police were investigating whether she may have been abducted, in the first few days after her disappearance several children in the area reported that a man in a car had tried to snatch them as they walked along a road. As everyone now knows, Shannon's disappearance was a sham created by her mother in an attempt to obtain money. The power of auto-persuasion is very strong. If the Portuguese police had believed claims from supposed eye witnesses who backed up Jane Tanner's story, then of course they would have investigated them. I'm sure they investigated every single lead anyway. If I were a Portuguese policeman, I would be really angry by now, with all these intimations that they failed to do their job properly.

  2. Of course....the answer IS in PdL but NOT because some resident knows the answer. The only ones who know the answer are the mccanns.....is the couple once again going to go and harrass the opulation there?this is very worrying because these people want peace and quiet and have shown the mccanns are NOT welcome at all

THE SMITHS??? Will they finally take their testimony into account?...not very likely, I bet it's the "creepy man" on the sidewalk...

"...you don't start an investigation in Morocco or Spain or France or even Lisbon. This offence happened in Praia de Luz."

Couldn't agree more! Why did Metodo3 focus only in far-flung places and resorted to paying "witnesses" then?

  5. From the Daily Telegraph

"Dave Edgar, a retired Cheshire and RUC detective, and Arthur Cowley, who spent 30 years with police forces in the north west of England, are reviewing 30,000 files released by the Portuguese authorities after the investigation was shelved last year.

"They have uncovered a statement from a family who said that they saw a man carrying a small blonde child near the McCanns' apartment on the night of May 3.

"It corroborates the account of Jane Tanner, one of the couple's friends, who also said that she saw what she is now convinced was Madeleine being carried away by her abductor."

Yes, it's Smithy all right. Good old Irish Smithy, 80% sure, 90% sure it was McCadaver himself carrying a small blonde child near the McCanns apartment.

But hold on, which of Tawdry Tanner's numerous conflicting witness statements does this corroborate?

Careful now, you two retired coppers, or you'll find yourselves fired - you won't be the first - and having to make ends meet on your measly police pension.
