Satellite Clue to Maddie Kidnap

By James Murray

Home Secretary Alan Johnson is prepared to ask US spy chiefs for satellite images which may show the face of Madeleine McCann’s kidnapper, following intervention by the Sunday Express.

Hope of new progress came after it emerged Leicestershire Police never made a formal request to the Home Office for views of Praia da Luz on Portugal’s Algarve at the time the little girl vanished in May 2007.

The quality of pictures taken by satellites in space is now so good they can reputedly identify the colour of someone’s eyes.

Last night a senior source with the Portuguese police said: “We know US spy satellites regularly sweep over Portugal looking at military installations and government facilities.

“So we thought they might actually have images of Praia da Luz on the day of the kidnapping and the preceding days.

“We hoped spy images may have captured the kidnapper watching the apartment prior to the event or even on the day itself. Obviously, having a picture would have speeded up the apprehension of the offender.”

Yet more than two years after Madeleine was snatched no help has been forthcoming, despite early requests from senior Portuguese detectives.

The Portuguese source explained: “This was fully discussed with Leicestershire Police and officials with the British Government.

“We were confident of getting progress because of Gordon Brown’s interest in the case and this apparent special relationship between Britain and the United States.

“Your ambassador to Portugal even visited our officers soon after the kidnap.

“The bad news for us is that we got nowhere with this avenue of inquiry, which was both frustrating and infuriating.”

For, despite all the talk, nothing appears to have been done officially with the British government and the formal requests were never made.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson & PM Gordon Brown

Last night a spokesman for Mr Johnson said extensive checks within the security intelligence community had failed to discover any formal request ever having come to them through Leicestershire Police from Portugal.

However, he said that if a request were now made Mr Johnson would see whether he could offer any assistance in trying to persuade the Americans to become co-operative.

The issue appears so sensitive that Prime Minister Mr Brown may have to speak directly to US President Barack Obama in order to achieve co-operation.

The Sunday Express sought explanations for the extraordinary situation from the US government’s ultra- secretive National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

The agency’s lawyers are now considering a Freedom of Information request from the Sunday Express.

A spokesman for the agency said: “NGA does not provide imagery to private citizens or private companies. For reasons of national security we do not discuss specifics about what images we have or our capabilities.”

Private investigators working for parents Kate and Gerry McCann, who live in Rothley, Leicestershire, have also tried to access US satellite images, but with no success.

  3. More Sabre rattling from the Express. What a lot of rubbish. However I would adore this to be true and maybe confirm that it indeed was Mccann walking through the streets of PDL with Madeleine as Mr.Martin Smith is 80% sure that it was.

"Yet more than two years after Madeleine was snatched no help has been forthcoming, despite early requests from senior Portuguese detectives."

A British paper is actually reporting the truth about the efforts of the Portuguese police and the lack of cooperation of British police??!!!!

Go Sunday Express go, yes of course this should have been done when first requested by Dr. Amaral.

Perhaps we will finally know how Maddie disappeared from the flat and justice will be done to all involved.
Time for another PR operation McCanns, but PR will not be effective against actual data, will it?

  7. "Estados Unidos: Menino do balão a hélio"

    Pai nega publicidade

  10. Why G. Brown needs to speak with Obama? This is a criminal case, a justice case and not a political case.
Countrys all over the world, have special police channels to deal with this situations, this why there is Interpol and Europol. I remember one year ago, Interpol ask the cooperation of the public to locate a Deutsh paedophile and in less then 48 hours he was arrested in Tailand .

I can just think on Brown talking with Obama, if Brown has a suspicious that the man in the images can be the one which the Smiths are talking about. If so... wonder to see if the image will be published in the news. Most probably will be a statement highlighting the bad quality of the images, as an excuse... or they have to look at the Obituary to see which man or woman died already and can be "pinned"in PDL on Early May 2007... EVEN WITHOUT been noticed by anybody. Annother ghost inside a tale story which will end-up with responsables trying to convince us that Madeleine NEVER EVER EXISTED.

A esperança é sempre a última a morrer...

The McCanns need people's HELP, not unfounded criticism. Madeleine was ABDUCTED and we need to help her parents find her. The Scotland Yard, the Home Office, Gordon Brown, bloggers and forumites everywhere need to JOIN in an effort to get to the bottom of this ABDUCTION and find the perpetrator who took Maddie from apartment 5A that night.

But if they can get photo's revealing Gerald McCann and the others on that night it would be wonderful....I think we all know what they would show!

But if the government are wasting time and effort on this frankly ludicrous idea, then there should be a formal opening of the case in the uK, a proper investigation - not our'leaders' abusing their positions in favours!

Re-open the case for gods sake...lets get the facts out, the facts that tell us the McCanns made only one check that night - this has to be the way this is properly investigated.

What next? Why the Gaspar evidence was withheld for several months by the UK police?

The drugs test evidence obtained by the McCanns being worthless because of haircuts?

Why didn't the McCanns go searching in the direction indicated by Jane Tanner sighting?

  31. So the reader is being informed that:

    # senior Portuguese police officers in charge of the investigation were on the ball
and requesting vital information from Leicestershire Police

    # in spite of Gordon Brown's and the British ambassador's involvement Leicestershire Police failed to support the Portuguese by acting to obtain that vital
    information.

    # questions need to be asked as to just what Gordon Brown's involvement and the involvement of British diplomats was supposed to achieve and why the role of the
Leicestershire police appears to have been to impede the investigation rather than support it.

If I'm not mistaken these are the same questions asked by the senior Portuguese police officer in charge of coordinating the investigation which led to his being removed from the case at Gordon Brown's request.
Indeed those questions are posed in his book. Small wonder that he is McCann's primary target and that so much energy has been expended on suppressing the book and especially its publication in the UK.

There's a message here for the McCanns and all those who aid and abet them and it's not one of support.

  32. Remember the reported words of Sofia Real, talking about her husband:

“There are satellites which probably have close-up pictures of what was happening on the ground that day. He tried to get the images but he couldn’t. The US said the satellites were trained on Morocco at the time and that was it. That is what annoys him because he says the inquiry was not completed to his satisfaction."

I completely fail to understand why there are those here who sneer at the Express for trying to goad the British Government into doing what Amaral clearly wants.

  33. Once its out in the open that the Leicestershire Police have perverted the course of justice, the culprit who purposely impeded the investigation needs to be weeded out and exposed.

Why were the McCanns protected from the normal course of investigation by the Leicestershire Police when parents are the most likely suspects?

So many things were denied to the Portugese investigators - why?

    It stinks of corruption.

  40. When I first read about the portuguese police intention and request to see the satelite images and the subsequent poor excuse/denial(that Morocco thing) to that request I though that those satelites were british. Now, it seems we are talking about USA satelites, well, if that's the case why would the portuguese authorities need to go through the british Leicester pol. or the british government to get those images from the americans?!
Couldn't they simply have contacted the american authorities and place a formal request with them?
Why involve the british in this matter? Even with a british involvement in the investigation it still was(or should be) foremost a portuguese police investigation, they supposedly were in charge, not the british...but from this and other examples it sure seems they hesitated to take action and make decisions by themselves alone, and that they did nothing without the aproval of the british authorities.
    Why?...

  53. I agree that satellite imagery is highly unlikely to do what is claimed by the article, but that of course is not the purpose of the article.

The purpose of the article is to build up pressure for the reopening (or rather opening) of the case in the UK. The fact that the McCanns are studiously avoiding asking for the reopening the case is highly instructive of course. The Sunday Express know this.

We can only be thankful for this small chink of light in an otherwise gloomy landscape. The Sunday Express was foolish before in publishing wild allegations. It is now proceeding carefully, basing everything on the files and using the "bring in Scotland Yard"
    demand as brilliant cover.

It's noticeable these articles don't carry quotes from Mitchell and Co.

Wonder if Gerry will mentino the campaign in his blog (does it ever appear these days? good question - must check). Be interesting to see how he wriggles out of this one. support this well meant proposal. It is vital we stay focussed." Ha ha!

  54. Boy's Parents Facing Charges
    8:31am UK, Sunday October 18, 2009=SKY NEWS

"A sheriff in Colorado has said the parents of a boy mistakenly believed to have been carried away by a helium balloon will face charges.

Richard Heene, wife Mayumi and three children Bradford, Ryo and Falcon (pic: ABC)

Sheriff Jim Alderden was speaking after interviewing the parents of Falcon Heene for a second time.

The six-year-old was feared to have been in a weather balloon which flew away on Thursday, but was later found safe at home.

Sheriff Alderden had earlier said that he did not believe Richard and Mayumi Heene were guilty of a hoax.

He did not reveal what charges would be brought, although the couple have not been arrested.

"We were looking at Class 3 misdemeanour, which hardly seems serious enough given the circumstances," he said.

    Mr Heene with Falcon

The Heenes, who live in Fort Collins, are expected to give a press conference later.

The disappearance of their son Falcon became a media drama that gripped the nation.

However, suspicions were aroused when he was asked on TV why he had stayed hidden and he replied: "We did this for a show".

Falcon and his two brothers and his parents have given numerous TV interviews.

His father has repeatedly insisted his son's disappearance was not staged.

911 CALL OF 'BALLOON BOY' PARENTS

Richard Heene and his wife have previously appeared on the reality TV show Wife Swap, leading to speculation they were seeking publicity.

US news networks devoted hours of live coverage to the drama after it was reported the boy might be in a balloon floating high over Colorado.

When the aircraft landed in fields there was no trace of him, prompting a major ground search and increasing fears for his safety.

It was later announced he had been found alive and well in an attic at his family's home"

WHY THAT STORY REMINDE ME OF ANNOTHER ONE WHICH HAPENNED ON MAY 3, 2007, AT PDL?

Sunday Express instead of reporting the British government asking the help of USA inteligence with satellite images, must propose the Mccann's to go back to Portugal and:

-answer the questions which remain unanswered.
    -do the reconstruction.

POLICE INTERVIEWS WITHOUT PRESSURES gave much more information then any satellite image and will help Madeleine in many ways.

Wonder to see Sky news reporting the story of that boy and not condemning the colorado sheriff for looking at the inconsistencies statements of the parents and the strange behaviour.
I think, what will stay after Mccann's Media campaign it is the example, the bad example, to feed the imagination of some unscrupulous parents. AND THE ABSOLUTLY HELPELESS SUPORT OF THE MEDIA TO FIND MISSING CHILDS.

  55. Three cheers for the Express - I agree with the posts above namely I don't think the Express is going to let go of this story. I don't care what the paper's motives are - retribution or whatever - as long as they get to the bottom of it - justice for Madeleine.

    Much hinges on that.

  58. I have to wonder if the USA is actually interested in Portuguese military installations, Portugal being an ally of the States. If Mr. Amaral was actually told by American authorities that the satellites were trained on Morocco on May 3, 2007 then I would have to believe them, but if this information came to Amaral through an English intermediary then doubts exist. I think that the request for satellite images should not just be made for that specific day, they should actually be requested for the time period in which the McCanns were in Portugal. I'm not too familiar with the technology, but I think that the resolution would be compromised at night. The most important thing is to trace the movements of the vehicles used by the McCanns and their friends. I would be curious to know more about their trip to Huelva. Like many have said this article puts the PJ in a better light, it shows that they did make an effort.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Imo, this is an exagerated story.
What the paper wants to tell is that there was no cooperation from the side of the British police.
But is Madeleine so important in the story of human kind that even the president of the United States should be involved in it?
I don't believe a satelite would identifie the abductor but I think it could show where to the man was taking the child.

By now, the PJ must know it already.

  60. Bravo to the Express! It is now obvious what their agenda is.

Let us hope that they continue forward in releasing information the British public should have had access to long ago.

I do think the satellite images, if available, will provide much information about what happened that day in the McCanns' lives. If there was enough lighting in the area at night, is it possible that images from the area during the night time would be visible by satellite?

    1. Although Portugal is an ally, the satellites follow fixed paths and so they might well have data over Portugal. I guess it's a question of whether the camera is switched on and off.

    2. We know it's highly likely Express journalists visit this site. Perhaps people would like to offer suggestions for things the Express could follow up while still maintaining "pro" cover.

I think they could usefully focus on MO's claim to have seen the twins breathing through side mesh, from a distance beyond the doorway and in semi darkness. Surely they can find an expert to query that.

But maybe that's a step to far at the moment. What else could be suggested? Maybe the discrepancy in Kate's signature in the register? Maddy's "bad sleeper" star chart - meaning should could have wandered like the poor NZ child found dead recently in a storm drain.

  63. Fernis - happy to accept your apology. I think we have all had to put up with so much rubbish from the British press over the last couple of years that sometimes it isn´t easy to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Anyway, I bet "I hate Sundays" is the McCanns´ Desert Island choice at the moment (with apologies to Bob Geldof!)

  65. By having Brown and Johnson involved at this stage and stating that satellite images of her abductor may exist only helps to authenticate that she was abducted. No images will ever turn up as they would have by now with all the influence that the McCanns have. Its just anothert ploy to cement officially the abduction scenario.

  66. Joe -

So why aren't the McCanns coming out and backing the Express's call for action and a Scotland Yard investigation.

    I don't think they're happy about this.

  68. Anon,
Possibly because they perhaps know that the images do/do not exist and to go with the point I made about authentication of abductor by Brown and Johnson. Either way there is time yet for them to comment. I am truly skeptical of the Express and its intent on getting mileage out of this story for as long as possible. If the LP did not ever request the possibility of any images from satellite then that too is ominous and damning IMO.

  69. Perhaps at long last we are going to see Gerry McCann carrying his daughter's body down the road.

  70. The express can say what it likes we on this blog can say what we like. The Maccanns can say woosh woosh clunk clunk flash bang wallop, but the the bottom line is this case will never ever go away untill the fate of an innocent 3 year old is uncovered, so those who are not telling the truth, and I think there are quite a few, better get used to the fact there days of hiding and arrogance are slowly but surely drawing to a close. A little child in Portugal who never asked or deserved all this is waiting for justice she has been hurt enough let her soul rest shame on all those who will not allow that.

  71. Joe -

I must say that your comment makes absolute sense to me!

However, the article is food for thought and at least the public, or those who read the Express at least and there are those among them who will spread the word, must be asking questions about what happened to Madeleine and perhaps not believing every word the McCann's state as gospel.

  72. I believe, as other posters do, that the Express is getting some long overdue revenge.

Hopefully the Express can keep this up for weeks. Superficially helping the MC's but in reality sticking the boot in.

Outrage slowly building from the masses, ably abetted by the express, clamouring for Government involvement to press Portugal to have the case reopened.

    I like it.

  73. The sensor for the importance of that news it is the Media in Portugal... apart Correio da Manha, a newspaper where G. Amaral write articles, no any other newspaper or Tv gave a single word to that new step from British government. That mean's THE MEDIA GOT FED-UP of the Mccann's and their innuendos with new stories every week which ends no-where.

On top of that... public and journalists still remembering the answer gave by British authorities, two years ago, when PJ asked the images of the satellites togheter with access to Bank accounts, credit cards, mobile calls and sms. The answer was: THE SATELLITES WERE TOURNING INTO MOROCCOS ON MAY 3, 2007. IF they were tourning into Moroccos at that time, why this story now? when was the situation changed and with which finality? I know... at the time PJ asked the information... THE MOST INCONVENNIENT INSPECTOR was encharged of the investigation and will be difficult to manipulate the images and convince him. USA intelligence will not participate in a farse against Portugal because they have to preserve their strategic militar position at AZORES. USA intelligence it's not so easy to manipulate as the FSS Lab, with results taking a long time to be delivered to Portugal and being convenniently inconclusive. NOW, THE INSPECTOR is GAGGED and Mr. Brown desesperatly need to convince British people that the abduction hapenned, before the UK PM elections. He need to save his face and there is only two ways: Or he sticks on Mccann's stories and assume it with a big step trying to credibilize the abduction by involving the USA, or he let Mccann's down and tell the world that he was victim of a farse on his effort to try to help and save the girl. EACH of the steps lead into consequences: If he sticks on the Mccann's story, then portuguese authorities must be sued by the Mccann's and lets wait for the reaction of portuguese people in the streets, who strongly believe that there was pressures when PJ was so close to solve the case. If he let Mccann's down, then they both and their friends must face charges in Portugal, UK and maybe Moroccos with effective prison, which will be much more time then the 2 years claimed by Kate, as a PJ proposal when she was questionned by them. AND THE CIRCUS MUST BE ON because TV REALLITY SHOWS became boring.

  74. On July 13th 2009, The Madeleine Foundation wrote to the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, in relation to the petition to order a review of the role of the British Police in the Madeleine McCann case.

Here is a link to the petition which lapsed on July 31st 2009, with 631 signatures. To date there has been no reply from the Prime Minister despite numerous e-mails from ourselves and our MP`s

    http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Britpolicereview/

The original letter to Gordon Brown which addresses a number of areas of concern, including the failure to forward vital information to Portugal and displaying a link to a fund set up by the suspects in a very serious case, can be read here.

    http://madeleinefoundation.org/main/2009/07/letter-to-prime-minister-gordon-brown/

I can confirm that the Madeleine Foundation has received a very un-satisfactory reply and many items in the letter appear to have been disregarded. As a result, the Madeleine Foundation intends to engage in further correspondence on this issue, given the large number of topics that were disgracefully brushed aside.

A copy of the reply from the Home office can be found here:

  75. If the Americans have such a technology why don't they catch their own criminals ? or don't they photograph themselves ?

  76. Good point anon.@ 07:25(19/10)!
If indeed that technology is so fantastic, if it allows for such detail as to showing the colour of someone's yes(!?), why haven't the americans used it to help them find Bin Laden in the mountains of Afheganistan and catch him???

  77. This Sunday Express story could be a genuine attempt to reveal the truth. But the disparaging remarks about Leicestershire Police could be a way for the Prime Minister to distance himself from them because of the letters and emails and public concern in the petition to him calling for an investigation into how Laicestershire police handled the MBM case.

  78. Dont hold your breath.....but yes I still would like this to happen,to be true and that finally justice is made to Madeleine, with or without satellites.Just the pain truth and justice will do....but people are pushing right now in the US and if the satellite views does not go against the US interests then there might be a chance BUT ONLY if it is ok for the US. "Of course", the truth for Madeleine is not THAT important.
