New evidence from Portugal

But attempt to prove McCanns guilty relies on witness who fled

New forensic evidence is being sent from Praia da Luz to be analysed in England, the Portuguese police announced today. The evidence, which comes from the holiday apartment from which Madeleine McCann vanished on May 3, is allegedly part of a new attempt by the Portuguese police to prove that Gerry and Kate McCann are responsible for their daughter’s death. The decision to send more forensic evidence was made when police investigating the case in Portugal visited their British counterparts two weeks ago.

The case made against the McCanns by the Portuguese police also relies on a key witness who, it was revealed today, has gone into hiding. The waiter who worked at the Ocean Club resort where the McCanns were staying was the only person to see Kate McCann directly after Madeleine went missing. He has fled the Praia da Luz area allegedly due to the huge amount of media attention on the case and the vast number of private eyes and detectives swarming the area. The Portuguese police, who claim they can prove the McCanns are lying with the waiter’s testimony, say that they know where he is.

The waiter is the only witness to have seen Kate McCann raise the alarm when she discovered Madeleine was gone. Although she claims to have screamed “Madeleine’s gone, Madeleine’s gone,” the waiter told police he heard her screaming “They’ve taken her, they’ve taken her!” Detectives want to ask McCann why she assumed her daughter had been abducted and not simply wandered off. They also want to know why she returned to the tapas restarant, leaving her twins unattended, straight after discovering Madeleine’s dissapearance.
