Author accuses British TV of Bribery Attempt

Diário de Notícias (not online, paper edition)

A Proposal. Paulo Pereira Cristóvão says that 2500 euros were offered to him by each comment to attack the PJ.

- “… We will pay you 1500 euros for each afternoon that will meet with our team to comment the progress of the case Madeleine.
- Ok.
- We would like you to do for us only a small assurance …
- Tell me!
- The fact is that we have an editorial line that is positioned against this form of investigation and obviously we would like to know if we can count on your support. ”

The conversation narrated in the book A Estrela de Madeleine [Madeleine’s Star], in page 121, is set by Paulo Cristóvão as having taken place “in a hot afternoon in the beginning of September of 2007”, by cell phone. “The number that appeared in the phone screen began with 0044 number [international country code of the United Kingdom]”. The author does not say anything else about the identity of the TV channel in question since, as he says, he has not a way to prove that the conversation took place in those terms. But Paulo does guarantee that the man who contacted him asked “if the problem is money” then, said “we all have a price, no?”, raising the offer to 2500 €.

Paulo Cristóvão speaks in the book of rumours of other attempts to buy-off "information" and of "comment" from British media representatives who approached and solicited ordinary people and Portuguese journalists, and he guarantees that because of knowing about those attempts he never accepted to collaborate with media from that origin, in spite of having collaborated with documentaries and news from various European TV’s. “There is not enough money that could ever make me betrayal my own country or what I believe in” – he replied to the described proposal.
