McCanns furious as Divers resume search for Madeleine

Divers resume search for Madeleine

DIVERS RESUMED a search of the waters at the Arade Dam on Monday, March 10, in a private operation commissioned by the Madeira-based lawyer Marcos Aragão Pereira.

The operation started shortly after 10am near the dam’s level control tower as the information obtained Mr Aragão points strongly to that area of the lake.

The search is being directed by Martin Falkous, who has five divers from Dive Time, based in Lagos, plus two from the Portimão Bombeiros who have joined the operation in their own time.

They have been trained in searching for bodies and were invited to participate by José Paias, who is sponsoring the operations.

Madeira-based lawyer Marcos Aragão Pereira and his assistant Telma Fernandes at Arade Dam this morning.

Martin Falkous said that they were looking for a body or body parts. If anything is found, the divers have been told not to bring it to surface but instead mark the spot with buoys for another boat to be called to carry out recovery.

Visibility in the water is very poor and the divers are using touch and feel in their search. With mud being between one and two metres deep at the bottom of the water, the colour changed from a dark green to light brown within seconds of the divers beginning the search.

Because of these conditions, Martin Falkous has instructed the divers to bring up to the surface any strange objects, or objects out of the ordinary, that they find to be identified.

When divers arrived at the dam this morning, Marcos Aragão Pereira was already there with his assistant Telma Fernandes, and José Paias, one of the partners of SPEC, Lda, an engineering company based in Portimão which is sponsoring 50 per cent of the cost of the operation.

A few minutes later, Heldér Braz, who is in charge of the dam’s monitoring and control system, joined the group as Marcos Aragão Pereira asked INAG, the national water agency which controls all the dams in the country, to allow the divers to go inside the water tower tubs.

This followed the first phase of searches, held in late January and February, when divers found an entrance covered by a metal grate and could not search inside the water tubes leading to the tower.

The system is used to water the fields located in the south side of the dam and the last time they were accessible was in 1998, when the dam was emptied.

The search is expected to continue until the end of the week and Marcos Aragão Pereira has said that if Madeleine McCann’s body is found in the Arade dam, he will reveal all the information related to the tip-off that has led to the search.

McCanns furious as divers begin second search for Madeleine's body

Kate and Gerry McCann reacted with fury yesterday after divers began a second search of a reservoir for Madeleine's body.

The couple told friends the search - funded by a Portuguese lawyer who they claim is a "fantasist" seeking publicity - is a distraction from the hunt.

Marcos Aragao Correia claims crime contacts told him she was killed and left in the lake two days after going missing.

Correia spent thousands of pounds on a previous search but found nothing.

But a McCann source said: "There's no evidence Madeleine is in that reservoir.

They believe she is alive and are concentrating on finding her."

Who is Marcos Teixeira Aragão Correia?

Marcos Teixeira Aragão Correia, a lawyer and a PND founding member , says that criminals from underworld contacted him on 6th May and that gave him details about Madeleine's rape & murder. He further claims that he had given this information to police who ignored it. In the first private search at Barragem do Arade, an isolated man-made lake, Marcos Aragao Correia funded the £1,200-a-day reservoir search himself . This lawyer has no record, in Portugal, as a Human Rights lawyer. He is not known in relation with any high profile case where Human Rights were at stake.

This is the same lawyer who in November 2007 failed to prosecute* the Correios de Portugal (CTT) because these have not delivered a registered letter to the McCanns. (Link to the letter sent to the Judicial Court of Portimão- Word file)

The letter, according to the lawyer, provided clues "that are of high credibility" and that could help in the investigation of the disappearance of Maddie.

Those elements were referred to the PJ (Judiciary Police) of Portimão by researchers from Funchal, but had no credibility.

He said Metodo 3 was "very interested" in his information.

«The lawyer has contacted Kate and Gerry McCann's detective agency, which has begun to investigate his theory. If true, Mr Correia, 32, believes it would clear the couple of suspicion that they were involved in their daughter's disappearance.

He refused to reveal his underworld sources but said: "They indicated that Madeleine had been abducted, raped and murdered within the first two days after her abduction, and her body thrown into a lake in the Algarve."»

The McCanns now in Fury previously stated :"It is fantastic news."

«The couple learned of his comments on Saturday, as they prepared for a party to mark the third birthday of their twins, Sean and Amelie.Mr McCann, 39, said the comments could be a much-needed "breakthrough" and added: "It is fantastic news."

"We still have a long way to go but people in Portugal need to understand what has been happening and what we have been going through.

"We know it will take the police a long time to accept what has been happening is wrong, but it is an important step towards that."»

  1. Hi Joana, for this story to have any credibility there would have had to have been an abduction and we all know the likelihood of that.

Perhaps there may be something in the lake, but just who put it there, who knows?
