Messages from Brussels

Plenary agenda for Thursday 10/04/2008

11:00 - Missing child hotline - Edward MCMILLAN-SCOTT (EPP-ED, UK) [In Europe there is already a missing children hotline to call: 116000]

Other events Alert systems for missing or abducted children 09:30 - 10:30 Brussels, ASP 3E2 A meeting of MEPs with an interest in child welfare issues will discuss the prospects for setting up a Europe-wide alert system for cases of child abduction. They will hear from Gerry and Kate McCann, whose daughter Madeleine has been missing since May 2007. The meeting coincides with the tabling of a draft written declaration on emergency cooperation in recovering missing children. Among those taking part in the meeting are its authors: Roberta Angelilli (UEN, IT; rapporteur on the Communication “Towards the rights of the child”); Glenys Kinnock (PES, UK); Edward McMillan-Scott (EPP-ED, UK); Struan Stevenson (EPP-ED, UK) and Diana Wallis (ALDE, UK);

A press conference, including Gerry and Kate McCann, will be held in room PHS 0A50 at 11.00.

The participation of the McCanns is allegedly sponsored by Mr David Miliband Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

Many European citizens and other Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are said to be surprised by the invitation of the McCann couple to visit the European Parliament and discuss childcare-related issues as they are official suspects in an ongoing criminal investigation over the disappearance of their daughter and have publicly admitted to leaving their 3 children unattended in an apartment whilst they went out for dinner.

Following an e-mail letter sent to some Portuguese and British MEP's, regarding the McCann's publicity stunt to happen in a meeting in the European Parliament next Tuesday finally some answers from our representatives in the European Parliament start to arrive. [As more answers arrive I will update this page.]

The first message is from Nigel Farage MEP UK Independence Party South East Region regarding Edward McMillan-Scott.

Dear ***** ****** Thank you for your message about Mr McMillan-Scott's inappropriate initiative. This, I hasten to add, does not involve my colleague, UKIP-MEP, Roger Knapman. Apart from that, I quite agree with your remarks. It appears to me that Mr M-S is more concerned with obtaining cheap publicity - of which there has already been an inordinate and useless quantity concerning the McCanns - than with the political programme he was elected to pursue. However, the EU's "parliament" is notoriously a place for cheap publicity-seeking. It has no real power and its members have no real influence, unless, in the case of UKIP-MEP's (such as Roger and myself) they labour ceaselessly to expose the dangerously un-democratic nature of the EU. Yours sincerely Nigel Farage
